  1. Hello Lynne and any family of Elizabeth Bell who married William Butter Cochrane. He was my father’s grand uncle and I have all the Cochrane history recorded. Bill was a tin miner in 1875 in Stanthorpe, Queensland, then worked in his brother-in-law’s produce store in Smithfield, Cairns 1877 witnessing his murder from a gunshot. He married Elizabeth in 1881 and their daughter Wilhemina was born 1882. They then went to Tumblegum at the Tweed River Junction where he ran a general store with Elizabeth. Bill died in 1885 and left the store to Elizabeth. She married Joseph Walker three years later. Wilhemina married Abert Harris 1917. Please contact jvee@powerup.com.au for more information. June

  2. Thank you for that Info. A colourful story as well. I know Tumbulgum well and lived there from 2002-2005 but didn’t know abut the bells being there till after I had left. I would love the Cochrane information. Yrs. Lynne. .
