| 1820-1828 | ISLE OF RUM SCOTLAND | REDUCED FROM 400 TO 100 |
The Marquis of Salisbury has purchased the Island of Rum, for the sum of £24,000, to form a shooting-ground or deer-forest. In former times, Rum was one vast forest ; and it is still designated in the Gaelic language, “the kingdom of the wild forest.” This island is about eight miles long and seven broad. In consequence of two great emigrations of the people in 1820 and 1828, the population was reduced from 400 to 100 or 130-Inverness Courier. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2946770 The Courier (Hobart,… Saturday 29 November 1845, page 4. |

In our last we noticed the rapid advancement of the Country up to the present period, and now perhaps it is worthy of remark, that from the year 1813 to that of 1820, a period of seven years, the increase of our population amounted to 12,353, whilst from 1820 to the present time we may fairly calculate on an increase of 34,474 souls, which, during the latter period, is nearly three times greater than that experienced in the former

Mr. Malthus informs the Committee of the House of Commons, that the population of Ireland doubles every thirty years. Suppose then that in 1820 the population was 8 millions, in the year 1130, it would have been only 1, but how that one produced the two of 1160, the learned political economist has not informed us.
